Located six miles from Olympia at the southern end of Puget Sound, the Thurston County city of Lacey can trace its roots to the mid 1800's. The many lakes and farmable prairie land brought the first settlers to Lacey and contributed to the area's growth for many years.

Farming was soon overshadowed by recreation and the early 1900's saw a transformation of Lacey into a popular resort community. Horse racing and the Lacey lakes brought visitors in from miles around. By the mid 1920's, resorts in Lacey lined the shores of the Hicks, Long, Pattison, and Southwick lakes. Swimming, fishing, boating, camping, and even golf were favorite pastimes.

Today, Lacey real estate owners enjoy homes on those very lakes. Waterfront property starts in the low $200,000's for a small lakefront cottage and goes up to over $600,000 for a large, four-bedroom home with a sandy beach on Hicks Lake. Less expensive Lacey real estate is also readily available. Smaller two and three-bedroom homes are priced starting in the $150,000 range. In February 2006, the average home or condo in Lacey sold for $257,646.

The City of Lacey Parks and Recreation Department has taken an active role in preserving the beauty of the old resort community. Community parks, open spaces, and natural habitat areas offer the residents of Lacey diverse recreation choices. The multi-purpose Lacey Community Center in Woodland Creek Community Park is a popular gathering place and hosts many community events.

The 33,000 residents of Lacey enjoy the convenience of several suburban shopping districts and business parks. However, the Lacey city planners are currently discussing the development of an urban downtown core. Families are served by the North Thurston Public Schools, which educates nearly 13,000 students who consistently score above the state average on annual WASL tests.
